Keys to Preventing Sun Damage


One of the first pieces of advice that you will hear from any good dermatologist is that you need to take precaution to prevent sun damage. In fact, this admonition is repeated so often that many people grow blasé towards doctors’ warnings. Can the sun truly be so harmful? The answer is, of course, that it can–as the countless survivors of skin cancer and other sun-related ailments will tell you.

On a more positive note, however, most sun-related skin conditions are completely avoidable. Here are a few of the simplest steps that you can take to protect yourself:

● Wear sunblock. Spending time in the sun is a pragmatic necessity that also offers health benefits. However, a sunburn of any kind (and, in fact, even a quick tan) is a sign of damage. This is why applying sunscreen is a must whenever you plan on spending a sizable portion of time outside. Remember that this applies even under cloudy skies, as harmful UV rays can still reach the skin.

● Moisturize. Using a moisturizer can help skin regain some of its elasticity and firmness, while also preventing additional damage.
